Damn, BB Easton has done it to me again. With her novel STAR, she has once again caused me to have ALL. THE. FEELS through her writing. Just read the dedications in her novels, people! They are the first indications of the amazing words that you are about to read. The recurring theme with her books is that I do not want to put them down, and when I do finish reading them I immediately feel the need to go back and read them again…and again…and again because I don’t ever want them to end! STAR is the third spinoff novel from BB’s memoir, 44 CHAPTERS ABOUT 4 MEN. In STAR, BB takes us on a journey through fairy tale love and adventure, with the right amount of uncertainty thrown in. If you are not familiar with BB Easton’s novels, they are largely autobiographical with name changes, combining of people/friends from her past, and exaggeration of some scenarios. In the introduction, BB states that STAR is by far the ‘truest’ novel she has written. STAR is the story of BB and Hans Oppenheimer’s love, and near combustion, at first sight. The story starts with BB on the mend mentally and physically from her terrible breakup with her previous boyfriend Harley (you really must read SPEED!)—in addition to yet another gut-wrenching relationship death with Knight, her first love. BB is fragile from her heartbreaking past with her former boyfriends, but she is getting stronger by the day. She has graduated high school early, and she feels passionate about her future career goals. I love seeing BB mature and start to realize she really does deserve more. And she’s still our fun and outgoing girl, even with her same insecurities. It is a house party where she first stumbles into Hans, with his bass guitar that was “red, red, red.” On the outside, with his “resting evil villain face,” and his dark features and sleeve of horror tattoos, Hans was scary but sexy. Their first bump into each other elicits a deep connection that is instantaneous and electric. Both BB and Hans feel the pull and ‘love at first sight’ feelings, but a misunderstanding on both sides makes them hesitate to really act on the attraction. But oh boy, when they straighten things out, they immediately jump head first into the depths of true love with some scorching physical and mental connections. BB soon learns that even with his dark appearances, Hans is the gentlest, most artistic, loving man she has ever met. And Hans does everything to show BB that she is the most beautiful, special woman he has ever met. Hans’ band starts to get some industry attention, and BB enjoys the initial party and adventure that their new found fame offers. Old insecurities and lingering self-doubt rear their ugly heads and BB’s past, in the form of Knight, comes back to haunt her. BB’s writing is so relevant, you feel it deep and understand completely the situations she writes about. I felt broken after reading the chapter about her confrontation with Knight after not seeing or hearing from him for months. Their interaction ends in another ‘stabbed through the heart’ kind of way, but BB has some earth shattering revelations about her self-worth and what love is because of it. Hans reinforces those revelations in the pure, unbridled way he loves her back. Unfortunately, the stereotypes of the rock and roll lifestyle come to fruition and Hans can’t handle, and really doesn’t deserve, the woman that BB has become and the life she wants. Towards the end of her relationship with Hans, we get to read more about BB’s introduction to Ken, her now husband! BB’s writing about those initial months of their blossoming friendship is smart and funny and we are left feeling hopeful once again! I can’t wait to dive into Ken and BB’s story in her next novel! STAR (along with all of her novels and memoir) is a must read. I give BB Easton’s novel STAR 5 humongous stars!
